We've been at Bristol Crown Court today, which is one of the busiest in the South West. Today, eight judges were dealing with around 40 cases - including one of over two years old.
Barrister Joseph Broadway told us that, in his view, Lammy's changes "won't make any difference".
"The system just needs to be funded, and the main issue caused by successive government is not doing that," he said.
Simultaneously, he argued that it will "[undermine] one pf the foundational constitutional principles of the UK", and would be a "slide towards totalitarian attitudes to those accused of crime".
