Nov 28, 1958: First successful flight of the "Beast" SM-65B Atlas; the first operational intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), developed by the United States and the first member of the Atlas rocket family. Built by the Convair Division of General Dynamics at an assembly plant located in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. What later became very famous in almost any American garage, WD-40, a penetrating oil found its first use as a corrosion-inhibiting coating for the outer skin of the Atlas missile.

Theodore von Kármán (May 11, 1881 – May 6, 1963) originally from Budapest of Hungarian Jewish descent, super-brain, was a mathematician, aerospace engineer, and physicist who worked in aeronautics and astronautics. He was responsible for crucial advances in aerodynamics characterizing supersonic and hypersonic airflow. The human-defined threshold of outer space is named the "Kármán line" in recognition of his work. Craters on Mars and the Moon are named in his honor.

He also worked with occultist and the father of JPL, Jack Parsons before he blew himself up.

von Kármán fled Nazi Germany in 1930 and accepted a position as director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. I wonder what he thought about all those Paperclip Nazis coming to America.
