As I dictate this comment to my AIssistant, it still seems unreal that we had to flee our homeland over twenty two years ago ... a homeland we called the United Kingdom.
We are, of course, deeply grateful that New Zealand took us in, but I would be less than honest were I to state the transition has been easy.
Everyone has their thoughts as to why it all happened, but in retrospect it is apparent that a certain ossification took root in the minds of the political leadership during the Cold War which subsequently produced a fatal lack of vision to address the challenges of the future as the twenty-first century began.
But understanding somewhat why these terrible events occurred is of little solace when one gazes at images of the ruins of Oxford University or those of the destruction of Stonehenge. One's heartfelt agony is only worsened when one recalls this bitter fruit was not the work of a foreign power, but an accidental (?) lunge backwards into barbarism. And once that took place, there was no going back.
The current challenges are clear enough-- survival of what remains of our society, and, preservation of those aspects of civilization we have managed to keep. Those alone are daunting tasks, and it is not at all clear if we can persevere. The ghastly spectre of a new Dark Ages is visible on the near horizon.
