Since I got a gap to post and I did promise to write more on techniques.
I believe that the way to do these things is that we must talk about our own practices and what works for us. Everyone has their own experience, and I hope through sharing mine that it will help others. There is a video that came out recently on "All 325+ Competing Consciousness Theories In One Video." I meditate with my eyes fully covered, blacked out. Why? Well your eyelids are transparent, allot of light and shadows gets through. Complete darkness helps so that you know the light you are seeing isn't coming in through your eyelids or afterimages. Opening your eyes during meditation is problematic. Three reasons for that:
- They just slowly open sometimes through relaxation and you don't notice it, until you do and then it becomes a distraction
- I see my room often with my eyes closed, but it's impossible to tell they are open until you open them. It may sound weird, but your body is asleep and mind alert at this point. Sights and sounds get blocked out. The result here is finding out your eyes where actually closed or open and you also regain full lucidity and break the meditation. It's a big distraction
- Seeing apparitions appear while meditating with your eyes open leads to a detrimental mental state and yup, best to have your eyes covered and not suffer that. I do peak sometimes, especially when uhmmm
