Nov 8, 1901: Gospel riots: Bloody clashes take place in Athens following the translation of the Gospels into demotic Greek.


In the aftermath of the violence, the Greek Orthodox Church reacted by banning any translation of the Bible into any form of modern demotic Greek, and by forbidding the employment of demoticist teachers, not just in Greece but anywhere in the Ottoman Empire.

The riots marked a turning-point in the history of the Greek language question, and the beginning of a long period of bitter antagonism between the Orthodox Church and the demoticist movement. The 31-story 365 ft tall Landmark Hotel in Las Vegas, NV was imploded using a mere 100 pounds of dynamite on Nov 7, 1995 by none other than Controlled Demolition, Inc. At the time it was the second tallest building in the world ever imploded. Footage of the implosion was incorporated into the movie Mars Attacks! The site is now a parking lot for the Las Vegas Convention Center. Construction of the famous "futuristic" structure was started in 1961 by Howard Hughes.
