Nov 6, 2000: Lyon Sprague de Camp, American science fiction writer and non-fiction literature who coined the term "extraterrestrial" and "E.T." in May 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, dies in Plano, Texas. He was 92. Lyon moved to Plano in 1989. I moved to Plano in 1986 and left in 1988. A suburb of Dallas and back then it was a upper middle-class suburbia that was rapidly expanding.


During World War II, de Camp served as a researcher at the Philadelphia Naval Yard along with his fellow writers Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein. De Camp eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy as a reserve officer.

De Camp was a founding member of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America (SAGA), a loosely knit group of heroic fantasy writers that was founded during the 1960s and led by Linwood Vrooman Carter (pseudonyms: H. P. Lowcraft and Grail Undwin), with entry by credentials as a fantasy writer alone.

During World War II, de Camp was recruited to work at the Naval Air Experimental Station in Philadelphia on the recommendation of author Robert Heinlein, who, working as a civilian engineer for the military, suggested that the Navy hire his fellow science fiction writers de Camp and Isaac Asimov for their technical expertise. De Camp accepted the offer and applied for a commission in the Navy Reserve. He attended training school at Dartmouth College [private Ivy League research university that dates back to 1769] in New Hampshire in July 1942 and was commissioned as a lieutenant. De Camp, Heinlein and Asimov all worked together in Philadelphia, designing and testing naval aircraft. De Camp left the Navy with the rank of lieutenant commander.

In his later years, de Camp wrote more fantasy than science fiction, completing and editing several “Conan the Barbarian” stories originally written by Robert E. Howard, who died in 1936. The Science Fiction Writers of America named him a “Grand Master” in 1979, and he received a World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement in 1984. He also received a Hugo Award, the highest prize in the field of science fiction, for his 1997 autobiography, “Time and Chance.”

Nov 7, 2000: Jean Hill, full name Norma Jean Lollis Hill was one of the closest eyewitnesses to the John F. Kennedy assassination known as “the lady in red” due to her distinctive coat, dies at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where President Kennedy was pronounced dead. She was 69. The same hospital where Kennedy's accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and Oswald's killer Jack Ruby died.


Hill was less than 20 feet away from Kennedy when he was fatally shot. After the assassination, she became an outspoken advocate of the "grassy knoll second shooter" theory, and she claimed for the rest of her life that the government was covering up the truth. A teacher by profession, she was a consultant for Oliver Stone's 1991 film JFK and co-wrote JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness with Bill Sloan.

Epstein made introductions and held meetings between Ivorian leaders and Israeli intelligence-linked firms and individuals that helped lay the groundwork for the deal that helped flood Cote d'Ivoire with Israeli surveillance tech.
