When I was a kid, we were taught that "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me."
Bllunt words are far less physically damaging than sticks, stones, bullets, bombs, molotovs, and knives.
"Hate speech" tends to leave fewer leaky holes in one's chest... so they go after the soft targets, because cowards always avoid those leaky holes at all costs.
Even the cost of their own souls.
