Nov 1, 1870: the first systematized and synchronous meteorological reports were taken by observer-sergeants at 24 stations in the new agency. These observations, which were transmitted by telegraph to the central office in Washington, D.C., commenced the beginning of the new division of the Signal Service.

Although these were just 24 hours ahead. The agency was placed under the Secretary of War. The Bureau would later be moved to the Department of Commerce in 1940 and later The Weather Bureau became part of the Environmental Science Services Administration when that agency was formed in August 1966. The Environmental Science Services Administration was renamed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on October 1, 1970, with the enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act. At this time, the Weather Bureau became the National Weather Service.

Nov 1, 1962: "Let's get a lock for this thing" on the editorial page of the Washington Post. Pandora’s Box cartoon by Herbert Lawrence Block aka Herblock (1909-2001).


Within days of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., Herblock pointed his finger at Richard Nixon, proving that cartoonists have more flexibility than other journalists. He beat Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s October 10, 1972, exposé of the break-in by almost four months. In 1973, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, Herb Block, and their editor, Roger Wilkins, shared a Pulitzer Prize for exposing the Watergate story.

He coined the term "McCarthyism" in 1950. Herblock won three Pulitzer Prizes for editorial cartooning (1942, 1954, 1979), shared a fourth Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for Public Service on Watergate, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994), the National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award in 1957 and 1960, the Reuben Award in 1956, and the Gold Key Award (the National Cartoonists Society Hall of Fame) in 1979. In 1986 he received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award as well as an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Colby College, and in 1999 an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Harvard University.

On October 31, 2025 Basílica de la Sagrada Família in Catalonia, Spain became the world’s tallest church after a part of its central tower was lifted into place and reached 534 ft 8in (162.91 m), surpassing Ulm Minster in Germany by 4ft 6in. The tower is intended to reach 564 ft (172 m) when completed, expected in 2026.


The first stone of the Sagrada Familia was placed in 1882 by the master architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) who never expected it to be completed in his lifetime. Only one of its towers was finished when he died.
