Oct 26, 1867: the Territorial Enterprise published a hoax story by friend, colleague, and one-time roommate of Mark Twain, Dan DeQuille of "Traveling Stones" from "the wildest and most sterile portion of southeastern Nevada" called Pahranagat Valley. Tired of questions, DeQuille admitted the hoax in 1879.

The blast was known as "Bluegill Triple Prime" and was part of Operation Fishbowl, a series of high-altitude nuclear tests that was itself part of the larger Operation Dominic. The detonation occurred at approximately one minute before midnight, local time on Johnston Island.
