Having done security and security consultation over decades of my life, I can confidently say that I don't blame them. If I'm at an unarmed post, I'm not going to stop anyone from doing anything. The sole job of unarmed security is to observe and report - they're not paid to interfere with anything at all.
If folks want their guards to act like armed guards, then arm them. Vet them for mental defects, and if they have none, arm 'em up. Anyone who cannot be trusted with weapons also cannot be trusted to do security related jobs.
I, for one, am not going to risk my one and only life needlessly for a bunch of shiny geegaws if I'm not armed and the other guys might be That's a pretty certain path to get your wife a widow's pension and have your kids brought up without a dad.
That's coming from a guy who carried a gun for a living for most of his adult life, and occasionally found himself in pretty hairy situations. If you can't trust me to carry a gun, best not trust me to be your hero in an emergency, either. I'll lean against a wall and watch 'em carry everything in the place off, because that's what you're paying me to do - watch and report, not body block a bullet.
