My conjecture is that Masons built the Stones.
Masons may have dropped them, too.
It is not like ALL Masons are one big happy family. Lots of rivalries in the "secret" societies. Maybe some other Masons got a case of the jaws with the "Elberton Gang" and decided to take away their toy.
The irony of the secrecy behind who organized their construction is that, once they were dropped, very few people cared. Zero transparency of the project also meant zero participation from the public, local to Elberton, or otherwise. Even today, a mere three years after they were destroyed, they are practically forgotten except as an occasional topic in forums like these.
