Sept 27, 1941: the U.S. launched the first 14 of a new class of cargo ship that FDR said would help protect "the liberty of the free people of the world." The first Liberty ship was SS Patrick Henry, named after Founding Father Patrick Henry. Built in less than 5 months and this day was designated Liberty Fleet Day. An astounding 2,751 Liberty ships were built between 1941 and 1945. It was the largest number of ships ever produced to a single design.

In the speech delivered at the launching, Roosevelt referred to Patrick Henry's "Give me Liberty or give me Death!" speech of March 23, 1775. Roosevelt said that this new class of ships would bring liberty to Europe, which gave rise to the name "Liberty ship".

The S.S. Star of Oregon was among the first three Liberty Ships built in the United States and the first launched by Henry J. Kaiser’s Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation (OSC). It was the first of its class to enter service. It took 226 days to complete the ship, which was launched 131 days after its keel was laid in May 1941. The twenty-five thousand people who attended the launch in Portland exceeded any of the OSC’s hundreds of other ship launches. In spite of the ship’s auspicious beginnings, however, it was not long afloat.

The crew included as many as 62 civilian merchant mariners and 40 U.S. Navy sailors. Aesthetically unremarkable and expendable but effective and highly adaptable, President Franklin Roosevelt called the Liberty Ship an “ugly duckling.”

The S.S. Star of Oregon, named for the first ship EuroAmerican settlers had built in Oregon, was one of the few Liberty Ships not named after a deceased person of historical significance.

Sept 27, 1962: Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" is published. This book inspired an environmental movement and the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by the Nixon Administration in 1970. It was also influential to the rise of ecofeminism and to many feminist scientists. Well, it started off with good intentions and spun off other environmental movements until the hands of corruption infected it to what it's become today.



Fooling With Nature

Rachel Louise Carson (1907-1964) was an American marine biologist, writer, and conservationist. Late in the 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially health problems she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides, notably DDT. The result was the book Silent Spring (1962), which brought environmental concerns to an unprecedented share of the American people. In her end, cancer & radiation treatments killed her at age 56.

Colesville, Maryland is in Montgomery County, the wealthiest county in America, predominantly upper-upper White middle-class suburbanites where many of the D.C. swamp creatures live. Supposedly has the most modern advanced public school indoctrination system in the country if you catch my drift.


Sept 27, 1964: Warren Commission published its Rush to Judgement 888 page tale on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It concluded Lee Harvey Oswald was the assassin and acted alone. It also concluded that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald 2 days later.




Sept 27, 1968: After centuries of censorship, the controversial American hippy musical theatre show "Hair" opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, one day after the abolition of theatre censorship in UK, allowing for the production to include its controversial nudity and profanity. The musical told the story of the "tribe", a group of politically active hippies living a bohemian existence in New York City.


A young David Bowie auditioned for a part - four times in total - but was never invited to join the London cast (he later attended a performance but reportedly came away "unimpressed"). The BBC republished & updated their piece a week ago with more emotional dramatic effect with a focus on nudity, but of course.



Sept 27, 1985: Chuck Norris's INVASION USA opened in theaters. A one-man army comes to the rescue when the United States are invaded by communists. Damn, we need a modern day Chuck for the USA, UK and Europe.
