'Tis once again Talk Like a Pirate Day, and thar ye be sittin', me beauties and landlubbers, with yer cup o' grog, or yer bucket o' chum, holding this scurvy newspaper in your hand, just a-waitin' fer a tale.

What? Ye never heard of Talk Like a Pirate Day, ye slimy bilge rat?

Well, don't get yer doubloons in a wad, me hearties. Just bend ye an ear.

If ye read that scurvy syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry on Sundays, ye might know what we're talkin' about.

But it was two landlubbers in Albany, John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), who started this whole thing - that's now gone international - when they e-mailed Barry last year and asked him to promote it.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers of Albany, Oregon, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. It has since been adopted by the Pastafarianism movement as an official holiday. The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Pastafarianism, a social movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion.

Dressed as pirates, ten University of Sydney students boarded and "captured" USS Bennington (CV-20) in the early morning on May 7, 1957 when the carrier was visiting Australia. The students managed to get to the bridge and sound the general alarm. Marines removed the students from the ship, and no charges were filed. The incident is sometimes referred to as the "Pirates on USS Bennington" incident. The Navy later claimed it had approved the prank. However, the event caused a security review and tighter security on the USS Bennington. It is remembered as a daring Aussie prank, with the students collecting money for a local charity during their "capture".

Charles Lindbergh and his famous Spirit of St Louis spent the night in Reno, NV on Sept 19, 1927 amid his Guggenheim Tour of the US, including 48 states and 92 cities. Reno was his only stop in Nevada. Lindbergh stayed in Reno long enough to sit in the lead car in a procession through town with then mayor E E Roberts on Sept 19, 1927. Lindbergh gave a speech at Idlewild Park.

On June 4, 1979, president Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4664, establishing POW/MIA Recognition Day. Since then, it has been observed every year on the third Friday in September. These MIA bracelets are part of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library collection, all gifts to Governor and President-Elect Carter between 1969-1976.




Caedmon Records was a US spoken word label founded in 1952. It performed a service absolutely no one else was doing for decades. The label's first release was a collection of poems by Dylan Thomas as read by the author. The B-side contained A Child's Christmas in Wales. Its marketing tag-line was Caedmon: a Third Dimension for the Printed Page. The name changed to Caedmon Audio when the label switched to CD-only production. Caedmon is "credited with launching the audiobook industry in the United States".

Chrystia Freeland of the Canadian Liberal Party was the 10th deputy prime minister of Canada from 2019 to 2024. She lost to current PM, Mark Carney. In March 2025, she rejoined the Cabinet as Carney named her minister of transport and internal trade, roles she held until resigning in September to become the Canadian special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine...whatever that means.
