Sept 18, 1873: The U.S. bank Jay Cooke & Company declares bankruptcy, contributing to the Panic of 1873. A cascading series of causes & effects leads to an epic financial crisis that triggered an economic depression in Europe and North America that lasted through the decade.

The Panic of 1873 and the subsequent depression had several underlying causes for which economic historians debate the relative importance. American inflation, rampant speculative investments (overwhelmingly in railroads), the demonetization of silver in Germany and the United States, ripples from economic dislocation in Europe resulting from the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), and major property losses in the Great Chicago Fire (1871) and the Great Boston Fire (1872) helped to place massive strain on bank reserves, which, in New York City, plummeted from $50 million to $17 million between September and October 1873.
The first symptoms of the crisis were financial failures in Vienna (the Big Apple), the capital of Austria-Hungary, which spread to most of Europe like a virus and across the pond to North America by 1873. There is still much debate by economist historians today on exactly what caused it other than a serious of unfortunate events.
Sept 18, 1939: Nazi one-way social media campaign begins. The radio show Germany Calling! founded on behalf of Reichsminister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels, begins transmitting Nazi propaganda. Target audiences were mainly the UK and the United States. Broadcasts were sent via shortwave in approximately 30 languages. The broadcasts opened with "Germany calling, Germany calling," spoken in an affected upper-class English accent.
His last broadcast while drunk was April 30, 1945. The next day the British Army finally put a stop to it. The next scheduled broadcast was made by Horst Pinschewer (also known as Geoffrey Perry), a German-Jewish refugee serving in the British Army who announced the British takeover. Pinschewer was later responsible for the capture of William Joyce (shot him in the ass). He was executed (hanged) in the Wandsworth Prison UK on Jan 3, 1946 for high treason. The scar (known as a Glasgow smile) on Joyce's face split wide open due to the pressure applied to his head upon his drop from the gallows. It is believed that Joyce made a deal with his prosecutors not to reveal links he had to MI5. In return, his wife Margaret, known to radio listeners as "Lady Haw-Haw", was spared prosecution for high treason.

Today, it is best known for its employment of several radio presenters jointly known as Lord Haw-Haw — most notably William Joyce, who was German radio's most prominent English language speaker and to whom the name gradually came to be exclusively applied.

The agency's creation was authorized by the National Security Act of 1947. The CIG was dissolved on Sept 18, 1947 and became the CIA. Happy Birthday.
The office diary of the President's chief military advisor Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, records a rather unexpected event on 24 January 1946:
At lunch today in the White House, with only members of the Staff present, RAdm Sidney Souers and I were presented [by President Truman] with black cloaks, black hats, and wooden daggers, and the President read an amusing directive to us outlining some of our duties in the Central Intelligence Agency [sic], "Cloak and Dagger Group of Snoopers."
With this whimsical ceremony President Truman christened Admiral Souers as the first DCI.
The humor and symbolism of this inauguration would have been lost on many veterans of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the big intelligence and covert action agency that Truman had suddenly dismantled at the end of World War II, only four months eailier. CIG inevitably suffered (and still suffers) from comparisons with OSS. The Group began its brief existence with a phony cape and a wooden dagger. It was a bureaucratic anomaly with no independent budget, no statutory mandate, and staffers assigned from the permanent departments of the government. Nevertheless, CIG grew rapidly and soon gained a fair measure of organizational autonomy. The Truman administration invested it with the two basic missions of strategic warning and coordination of clandestine activities abroad, although interdepartmental rivalries prevented the Group from performing either mission to the fullest. Strategic warning and clandestine activities are the two basic missions of today's CIA.

From here on out and through the 1950's to JFK it was the Navy boys who ran the CIA regards to Black tech, along with Allen Dulles on the nefarious side. Ret. Admiral Bobby Ray Inman could tell you all about it and much, much more, but those secrets will go to his grave. He's 94 today and still kicking.

I'm pretty sure my grandpa did this as a boy back in the Great Depression era.
President Nixon's military aide and his physician were not thrilled that he ditched them to go to a Washington Senators and the Oakland A's ballgame at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on June 11, 1969.

One can only imagine the shitstorms & sweat operations that the military aides & Secret Service must endure with president Trump. LOL. One of my cousins, a Marine was a military aide to president George H. W. Bush.

WHCA is the White House Communications Agency, established in 1942, a military unit which provides mobile radio, Teletype, telegraph, telephone and cryptographic aides in the White House and at "Shangri-La" (now known as Camp David) for crisis events and when SHTF. FYI, Brig. Gen. Hughes under Nixon was the nuclear football carrier.
He was later nominated & promoted to Maj Gen and shortly after to Lt General (3-stars) by Nixon.
