Sept 10, 1813: American naval forces under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry defeated and captured an entire Royal Navy squadron of six ships at the Battle of Lake Erie. The battle was a major victory that gave the U.S. control over the strategically important lake.


This painting, which hangs in the U.S. Capitol, is a larger version of Powell's Perry's Victory on Lake Erie (1865) that hangs in the Ohio Statehouse.


Eureka! The US southwest changed significantly on Sept 9, 1850. With the Compromise of 1850, the State of California was admitted to the US as a free, non-slavery state, the 31st US State, with its capital initially set at San Jose.


The Greek word "Eureka" has appeared on the state seal since 1849, when California sought statehood, and means "I Have Found It."

The words were probably intended to refer to the discovery of gold in California.

Archimedes, the famed Greek mathematician, is said to have exclaimed "Eureka" when, after long study, he discovered a method of determining the purity of gold.

In 1957, attempts were made to establish "In God We Trust" as the state motto,  but "Eureka" was made the official state motto in 1963.

The Compromise of 1850 consists of five laws passed in September of 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery and territorial expansion. In 1849 California requested permission to enter the Union as a free state, potentially upsetting the balance between the free and slave states in the U.S. Senate. Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on January 29, 1850, in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. Furthermore, California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah. In addition, an act was passed settling a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico that also established a territorial government in New Mexico.

His overall view is worth considering today, given what is happening in the United States. The telltale signs of entering a "time of troubles" are the attempts to escape it by returning to a perceived past time of "greatness" and a leap into the future (AI, technocracy, etc.)
