Sept 9, 1947: a team working on the Mark II aka Aiken Relay Calculator at Harvard University, funded by the US Navy, recorded the first actual "computer bug" when an error was discovered to be caused by a 'moth' stuck to a relay component. The team included RADM Grace Hopper who helped popularize the terms "computer bug" and "debug".

Sept 9, 1965: James Stockdale was shot down over North Vietnam and captured. Routinely tortured during his 7.5 years in the "Hanoi Hilton", he disfigured his own face by cutting and beating it so that he could not used for propaganda purposes. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1976. If we goto war with China I hope our current Navy has few iron nail Admirals like this guy.

The "David Lightman" for this go-around-the-mainframe is Scott Denton (David Oliver from Night of the Creeps; passed away at 30 in 1992), just another one of those 30-year-old high school students with a knack for computers. He’s the project’s team leader alongside Karen Vandemeer (Susan “Boof” Ursitti).

This time, instead of the U.S. Air Force firing up the WOPR, they’re firing up a (stock footage) Saturn V (in 1988, no less, although the shuttle program was in full swing) from Vandenberg AFB topped with a top secret (and aren’t they all) satellite.


What’s the Airwolf doing here? Blue Thunder? Nope, it’s just a drone.

If you’re into the nostalgia of Apple IIs, dot-matrix printers, and dial-up modems running those drone forefathers, then enjoy the show. While this received a limited theatrical release and ended up on VHS, it’s never been — and more than likely never will be — released on DVD. Amazingly, there’s a VHS rip to watch on YouTube.
