Sept 1, 1795: twenty-one Juniors from Harvard College crowded into the dorm room of Nymphas Hatch and together founded the Hasty Pudding Club.  The club is named for hasty pudding, a traditional English dish popular at that time in America that the founding members ate at their first meeting. Each week two members, chosen in alphabetical order, had to provide a pot of hasty pudding for the club to enjoy. The Pudding claims to be the oldest collegiate social club in the United States.


In 2012, the Hasty Pudding Club, Hasty Pudding Theatricals, and The Harvard Krokodiloes merged into a single entity: The Hasty Pudding - Institute of 1770.


In 1949, members of the Hasty Pudding Club decided to honor a woman—at the time in short supply on Harvard’s all-male campus—not for her dedication to the theatrical arts, but for her good looks. The members of the society approached Margaret Truman—President Truman’s daughter.

Ms. Truman declined.
A year later, the members of the Pudding made an overture to Sharman Douglas, an American socialite celebrity (akin to Paris Hilton), the debutante daughter of the American ambassador to Britain, and one of Princess Margaret’s closest friends. The club announced that Douglas had been voted its “Woman of the Year” because [she has] done more for international goodwill than many a diplomat fully equipped with striped pants and portfolio.” Douglas declined as well.

The Hasty Pudding and Poetry in America initiative aside, Epstein has a long history of strong financial ties to the University. He has pledged donations of up to $30 million to individual researchers and funded the construction of the building that houses Harvard Hillel (a Jewish home-away-from-home that invites Harvard students to experience a variety of Jewish identity, practice, culture, and community), among other contributions.


Epstein also maintained an office in Cambridge for several years and forged close personal friendships with current and former faculty and administrators including Dershowitz, former University President Lawrence H. Summers, and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Henry Rosovsky.

Epstein’s secret charity Gratitude America, Ltd. also funded the Hewitt School, an elite private girls school in Manhattan; Harvard’s theater troupe, The Hasty Pudding Institute; the Film Society of Lincoln Center; and MET Orchestra Musicians. Epstein served as president of a private foundation called Gratitude America, Ltd. in 2014.

Gratitude America operates out of the United States Virgin Islands, where Epstein lists his permanent address. Its 2014 filings list Epstein as the president and Darren K. Indyke and Erika A. Kellerhals as the treasurer and secretary, respectively.

Sept 1, 1920: The Fountain of Time statue opened within Washington Park in Chicago, Illinois. Fountain of Time, or simply Time, is a sculpture by Lorado Taft, measuring 126 feet 10 inches (38.66 m) in length, situated at the western edge of the Midway Plaisance within Washington Park in Chicago. The sculpture is inspired by Henry Austin Dobson's poem "Paradox of Time". Its 100 figures passing before Father Time were created as a monument to the 100 years of peace between the United States and the United Kingdom following the Treaty of Ghent in 1814.


Time was intended to be matched by a sister fountain, Fountain of Creation, on the opposite end of the Midway. Work began but was never completed. The finished portions of Fountain of Creation, depicting figures from the Greek legend of the repopulation of Earth after the great flood, are considered Taft's final work, and were given to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his alma mater.
