August 24, 1814: British troops capture Washington, D.C. and set the Presidential Mansion, Capitol, Navy Yard and many other public buildings ablaze. US president James Madison and his wife have just enough time to pack their belongings and escape from the White House before the enemy enters. The invaders march into the dinner they find still sitting on the dining-room table and then set fire to the place.
Less than four days after the attack began, God decided to save Washington and drive out the British troops by sending a heavy thunderstorm, possibly a hurricane and a tornado which extinguished the fires, though it caused further destruction, but it did send the British packing back to their storm beaten ships. The British occupation of Washington only lasted for roughly 26 hours. This event marked a significant episode in the war, leaving the US capital in smoldering ruins.

The British war effort was substantially financed by Nathan Meyer Rothschild and his N.M. Rothschild & Sons bank in London which he formed in 1811, where it still operates today at New Court, St Swithin's Lane, London.
Peter Snow explains in a 2013 VIDEO what happened and how the British helped inspire the U.S. national anthem. He's quite a story teller character.
The August 24, 1907 Las Vegas Age noted that former Tonopah, NV resident, legendary Wyatt Earp settled near Parker, AZ on the Colorado River just south of the southern tip of Nevada. Wyatt and Josie Earp would live part time there working mining claims up until Earp's death in 1929.
His brother Virgil (July 18, 1843 – October 19, 1905) was a Deputy U.S. Marshal and City Marshal of Tombstone, Arizona. He spent his last days as a lawman in Goldfield, NV and by request of his daughter Nellie Jane Bohn he is buried in Portland Oregon.

After Wyatt's death, his widow Josephine took a keen interest in the writing of Earp’s biography by historian Stuart Lake. She had many talks with Harrison Leussler, who worked for publisher Houghton Mifflin, and who was able to give her confidence in the quality of Lake’s work. According to a letter from Leussler’s widow Margaret dated August 9, 1978, the Leusslers invited Josephine Earp to visit them in Palm Springs. When she arrived, she made a gift of the present gun and the pair of binoculars. In a letter dated August 5, 1933, she references the gift, saying “I hope you were afforded the most enjoyment in the use of Mr. Earp’s field glasses and revolver which I let you have.”
In the years after Tombstone, the Earps moved about the country, spending time in San Diego, Alaska, and other boom towns, earning fortunes and losing them. He and Josephine spent their later years in Los Angeles, where he did consulting for both law enforcement and the movies. This gun, which was manufactured sometime around 1900 (the H&R company was founded in 1899), dates from Earp’s later, post-lawman years.

August 24, 1968: Operation Canopus was the codename of the first French two-stage thermonuclear test. It was conducted by the Pacific Carrier Battle Group (nicknamed Alfa Force) at the Pacific Experiments Centre near Fangataufa atoll, French Polynesia. The test made France the fifth country to test a thermonuclear device after the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and China. Foreign assistance: Purchased heavy water from Norway to make tritium. Suspended from a tethered balloon 1,706 feet above the atoll, the device exploded with a yield of 2.6 Megatons.

The 1998 film Godzilla uses the "Canopus" test as the basis for the origin of the mutated monster. However, the footage in the movie is actually of the United States "Baker" Test, part of Operation Crossroads in 1946. This was the famous underwater nuke detonation you see in many movies.
August 24, 1991: Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as the head of the Soviet Communist Party (CPSU). Five days later, the Supreme Soviet indefinitely suspended all CPSU activity on Soviet territory, effectively ending Communist rule in the Soviet Union. Three years earlier TIME named him Man of the Year.

Gee, who would ever have thought that an economic crisis would derive from replacing cheap Russian energy with expensive American energy; shutting down nuclear power plants ahead of a global energy shortage; not developing technological sovereignty in the middle of the Fourth Industrial Revolution; responding to multipolarity by severing economic ties with Russia and China in favor of excessive dependence on the US which is pivoting to Asia; open the borders to unskilled labor; stealing sovereign funds of a great power; redividing and militarizing Europe to fight Russia yet again!! I guess this is all expected coming from a former BlackRock exec.

Assigned to VF-83 aboard USS Essex, the Nebraska farm boy scored five aerial victories while flying a Grumman F6F Hellcat named "Death ‘n Destruction", which became one of the most famous Hellcats of the war because of its distinctive skull & crossbones nose art and the nine kills achieved by Wonder 5 pilots while flying it. He was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and four Air Medals.

"It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong." – Thomas Sowell
