August 21, 1956: a Vought F-8 Crusader flown by Commander R.W. "Duke" Windsor became the first U.S. jet fighter in service to exceed 1,000 miles per hour. The Crusader was also known as "The Last of the Gunfighters" because its primary weapon was a 20mm cannon rather than missiles. BRRrrrrr

August 21, 1958: USS Enterprise (CV-6), the most decorated U.S. ship of World War II made her final voyage as she moved from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the scrapper in New Jersey. FADM William Halsey led an effort to preserve the Big E as a museum but the campaign was unable to raise enough funds to save the carrier.

On three occasions during the war, the Japanese announced that she had been sunk in battle, inspiring her nickname "The Grey Ghost". By the end of the war, her planes and guns had downed 911 enemy planes, sunk 71 ships, and damaged or destroyed 192 more.
