Vice Admiral Gerald Francis Bogan (July 27, 1894 – June 8, 1973) had a reputation for being tough and pugnacious. When he was captain of USS Saratoga (CV-3) during WWII, he got drunk in a club in New Caledonia and dared anyone in the place to fight him. A gunner's mate accepted the challenge and clobbered Bogan, knocking him out. The next day, the gunner's mate was ordered to report to the captain's cabin.

Bogan asked "Are you the man who knocked me cold last night?"
"Yes, Captain, I am," replied the gunner's mate.
Bogan then advanced the man to chief petty officer, saying "Well, Chief, that was a damn good right."

The death of Elvis Presley came in at No. 4 on The Associated Press’ list of top entertainment stories of the year, after the death of Bing Crosby, “Star Wars” and “Roots.” I think majority of population would have ranked Elvis as the #1 story of the year because it came as a SHOCK!

However, an unrelated tragic incident occurred: A drunk driver's car careened into three teenagers in the crowd, killing two of them. As the group of mourners grew around the gates of Graceland, a carnival atmosphere developed; people hawking T-shirts and other souvenirs began to work the crowd. The people who were unable to get into Graceland to pay their last respects to Elvis consoled each other by exchanging anecdotes about their idol. When reporters asked them why they were there, people inevitably gave the same reply: They didn't really know, but they felt they wanted to be where he was this one last time.


'It isn't enough to say that Elvis is king to his parents', wrote jazz musician Eddie Condon. 'That still isn't a free ticket to behave like a sex maniac in public before millions of impressionable kids. According to a scholarly friend of mine, Jackie Gleason, we'll survive Elvis. 'He can't last', said Gleason, 'I tell you flatly, he can't last'.

Since Elvis had played a key role in raising money for the USS Arizona Memorial, the U.S. Navy floated a wreath at Pearl Harbor in his honor. During his career, Elvis secretly visited the Memorial several times to pay his respects.

The 4th US Navy vessel named for the State of Nevada, the USS Nevada SSBN-733 ballistic missile submarine, was commissioned on August 16, 1986, at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corp., Groton, CT.
