August 11, 1942: actress & amateur inventor, self-taught, Hedy Lamarr & George Antheil received U.S. Patent 2,292,387 (issued to Lamarr under her married name, Hedy Markey) for a “secret communication system.” A secure torpedo guidance system that employed a novel technique known as frequency hopping.

Although the invention wasn’t immediately implemented, it did lay the groundwork for technology used to maintain security for military communications, cell phones, WiFi and Bluetooth. This work led to both being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

In 1953, the Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945, saw a significant development in its history: the first public open house was held in September of that year. This opening occurred because by 1953, much of the radioactivity at the site had subsided, or so they thought. Today, it can only be visited twice a year, the first Saturday in April and October.



August 11, 2016: Clare Bronfman [and her Ack Group of Companies] purchased Wakaya Ltd, which owns about 80 percent of Wakaya Island, a small [2,200 acre/eight square mile] island in Fiji.

Miss Bronfman already owned a private home on Wakaya prior to purchasing Wakaya Ltd, from David and Jillian Gilmour.

You might recall Clare Webb Bronfman (born 1979) in the media headlines for months back in 2019. The American heiress, convicted felon and former leader of NXIVM, a multi-level marketing company and sex slave cult based near Albany, New York. She is the youngest daughter of billionaire philanthropist and former Seagram liquor chairman Edgar Bronfman Sr. After a brief equestrian career, Bronfman began involvement in NXIVM, a business engaged in evil criminal activities during 1998–2018, which led to indictments on federal charges, including sex trafficking. She was released to a halfway house in the Bronx on May 4, 2024.

What's truly amazing is DDG 164 continued to maneuver here aggressively AFTER the collision. The idea that you wouldn't stop, reassess, change out the watch team, call home, etc., is just stunning and baffingly reckless.

Poisoning has been reported following children blowing whistles made from the hollow stem of water hemlock plants. Depending on one's health you may never recover fully. Ingestion of plant material may cause death in animals in as little as 15 minutes.
