Well, it sounds like folks are wising up, and the unease about not having borders any more - and make no mistake, without "borders" there is also no real "nation", for borders define the cultural and political entity known as a nation
- over there, so it's most likely that something will have to give eventually. The government CAN keep ignoring the People, but history shows that they do so at their own peril.
One way or another, either peacefully through the vote, or, if that is made impossible, then less peacefully through rocks, bricks, bottles, and pitchforks, the People WILL have their say, and be heard in the saying.
Even the mighty Soviet Union eventually succumbed to the will of it's People when they had finally had enough to get up off their asses and challenge the draconian government they were living under.
History has shown, time and time again, that the elites who think they are untouchable and may do as they please are not nearly as untouchable as they think they are. Strangely, it's a lesson they never seem to learn, no matter how many times it gets driven home. You'd think that if they were smart enough to rise to the top, they would also be bright enough to learn those lessons, but they never do. So, every few generations, they have to be given a reminder.
It looks like this generation, it just might be our turn.
