Great food for thought!
I've been harping on how our ideas of benevolent ETs are wishful thinking and fairy tales. They are here for something, and our presence is meaningless to their mission, or at least we aren't given any real consideration in the matter. If they are here, they are exploiting some resource, and they aren't asking us for permission to do so.
These beings are above us on the food chain. I don't mean that they are predators who will eat us, but I bet they wouldn't bat an eye if we were on a menu somewhere. The law of the jungle applies to all life in the universe, and the chain of command extends way above humanity.
If these ETs are as advanced as they are said to be, then we are like any other lower life form they find around our region of the galaxy. I'm surprised they don't have us do circus tricks for their amusement or shoot us for target practice, just for the hell of it. It is probably "medical experiments for the lot of them" from their point of view.
ETA: I don't think that we'd ever be held up near to their level, but I believe that we could be taken more seriously if we were a threat of some kind. It might get us wiped off the face of the Earth, but if we could seriously harm their mission and kill a bunch of them, we'd earn some respect as more than just lab rats or livestock.

A trail goes two ways and looks different in each direction - There is no such thing as a timid woodland creature - Whatever does not kill you leaves you a survivor - Jesus is NOT a bad word - MSB
