I think their sub-rosa mission is looking for an ultimate weapon ... one that will make hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers.
I don't trust the particle physicists in any case. They want recognition and create experiments that may not be a good idea -- things like creating states of matter that haven't existed since shortly after the Big Bang. The risks are poo-poo'd but all those reassurances won't count for anything if they somehow birth a stable black hole or something even more exotic.
