Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially launched a new political party, announcing the formation of the America Party in a July 5 post on his social media platform X.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote, following a poll he posted a day earlier asking his followers whether they would support such an initiative.
“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system,” Musk wrote on July 4. “Should we create the America Party?”
Musk’s poll found that 65.4 percent of respondents favored establishing the America Party. The announcement of the new party was made following Musk’s fierce criticism of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping measure signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4.
Musk’s opposition to the bill stems largely from its deficit-financed spending. A staunch advocate of fiscal restraint, he championed reining in government spending during his involvement in Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. The Congressional Budget Office has projected that the reconciliation budget measure will add approximately $3.25 trillion to the deficit over a decade.
Since early June, Musk has teased the idea of a new political party aimed at what he describes as the “80 percent in the middle.” A poll he shared on June 5 showed about 80 percent of respondents agreeing that the country needs a new political force—an outcome Musk called “fate.”
The following day, Musk embraced a suggestion to name the party the “America Party,” echoing the branding of his existing political organization, America PAC. Launched last year, America PAC was created to support candidates aligned with what Musk calls “the core values of America,” including secure borders, sensible spending, safe cities, a fair justice system, self-protection, and free speech.
Musk’s frustration with the One Big Beautiful Bill has been evident in recent weeks. On June 30, he vowed to challenge any Republican lawmakers who voted in favor of the measure.
“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!” Musk said in a post on X. “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
During the 2024 election cycle, Musk contributed nearly $300 million to Republican campaigns through America PAC, including substantial support for Trump’s presidential bid. Although he has signaled plans to reduce his political donations going forward, Musk has indicated he remains willing to invest in causes he deems critical.
Now, with the launch of the America Party, Musk appears poised to transform his political influence from funding candidates to building an alternative movement to challenge the America’s two-party system.
Musk’s push for a new political movement also follows a public feud with Trump, who has bristled at Musk’s outspoken opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and his threat to primary any lawmaker supporting it.
Trump recently took aim at Musk on social media, suggesting that DOGE—the agency Musk once advised—should scrutinize the billions in government subsidies received by Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla.
The two men once found common cause in promoting government efficiency, with Musk serving a 130-day stint as a special government employee under the Trump administration to help root out waste and fraud.
