June 17, 1885: the French steamer Isère (ship) arrived in New York with the crates holding the disassembled Statue of Liberty on board. New Yorkers displayed their newfound enthusiasm for the statue. Two hundred thousand people lined the docks and hundreds of boats put to sea to welcome the ship. It was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel.


The committees in the United States faced great difficulties in obtaining funds for the construction of the pedestal. The Panic of 1873 had led to an economic depression that persisted through much of the decade.

After five months' daily calls to donate to the statue fund, on August 11, 1885, the World announced that $102,000 had been raised from 120,000 donors, and that 80 percent of the total had been received in sums of less than one dollar.

June 17, 2025: Today is the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Two U.S. Navy ships have been named in remembrance of the event. The Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) received 11 battle stars during WWII. The Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) was one of the first ships to launch Tomahawks against Iraqi targets during Operation Desert Storm and again in 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom. Decommissioned: 22 September 2023.
