Here's your Friday the 13th sea story: In 1942, USS Fletcher (DD-445) tempted fate during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (AKA Battle of Friday the 13th) by being the 13th in a line of 13 ships while having a hull number that added up to 13 and a commanding officer who was US Naval Academy Class of '13. Fletcher was the only U.S. Navy ship to emerge from the fierce battle undamaged, earning the nickname "Lucky 13". Fletcher was one of the most decorated ships in WWII, earning 15 battle stars & 5 in Korean war. Ship named for Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher.

Coast Guard cutter "Eagle" original name was "Horst Wessel" when it was built and commissioned in 1936 by Germany. Namesake is Horst Ludwig Georg Erich Wessel who was a member of the Sturmabteilung, the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party, who became a propaganda symbol in Nazi Germany following his murder in 1930. He also wrote the song which came to be known as "Horst-Wessel-Lied", which was later used as the Nazi party's anthem. The song is banned in Germany and Austria since 1945.

The ship was captured in April 1945 by the British. At the end of World War II, the four German sailing vessels still surviving were distributed to various nations as war spoils. Horst Wessel was won by the US in a drawing of lots with the Soviet and British navies, and requested by the US Coast Guard. She was transferred to America and commissioned in May 1946 into the United States Coast Guard as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle; nickname is "America's Tall Ship".

June 13, 1975: A Texas man, Roky Erickson, attempts to get himself out of a psychiatric institution (Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane) by claiming that he is an alien, and that his electroshock therapy is a violation of intergalactic law. Apparently, he had enough of that electroshock nonsense!


Roger Kynard "Roky" Erickson (July 15, 1947 – May 31, 2019) was an American musician and singer-songwriter. Called an "outsider genius," he was a founding member and the leader of the 13th Floor Elevators and a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre in the 1960s.

The 13th Floor Elevators was an American rock band from Austin, Texas, United States, formed by guitarist and vocalist Roky Erickson, electric jug player Tommy Hall, and guitarist Stacy Sutherland. The band was together from 1965 to 1969, and during that period released four albums and seven singles.

The Evil One, also known as Roky Erickson and the Aliens or I Think of Demons officially, and as TEO, Five Symbols or Hieroglyph in some circles, is the first album by American psychedelic horror rock band Roky Erickson and the Aliens. The album was Erickson's first after his time with the band the 13th Floor Elevators and several years of personal problems.

His singing voice was described as "powerful, ragged voice." Ranked #17 on The 50 best psychedelic rock albums of the Summer of Love

The X-Files episode "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" features a character named Roky Crikenson in homage to Erickson. Crikenson, like the original Roky, believes himself to be an alien abductee.
