June 5, 2000: 405, a low-budget ($300) 3 minute film, becomes the first movie to be released exclusively on the Internet. In the days before internet video streaming and 5 years before Youtube, 405 amassed hundreds of millions of views, network broadcasts and landed Bruce and Jeremy with agents, lawyers and a new company, Strange Engine. 405 is also one of the earliest viral videos. It immediately became notable as an early example of the revolution in digital film-making and the use of broadband Internet as a channel to distribute media, and the results rival that of many major film and television production studios at the time. Film critic Roger Ebert referred to 405 as "the most famous short film in the history of the Internet".
