June 4, 1783: The Montgolfier brothers publicly demonstrate their montgolfière (hot air balloon) before a crowd of dignitaries in Annonay, France. With more taffeta, rope and sky-high hopes, what was really no more than a 38ft paper-lined linen bag took to the sky. The paper was lined with alum for fireproofing and the segments were held together by over 2000 buttons. This contraption rose to a height of 1000m and flew for over a mile.

June 4, 1942: Battle of Midway began. It came 6 months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and ended 3 days later in the first major victory for the US Navy over Japan. It’s been described as the most tactically decisive and strategically influential naval victory in WWII. The naval and air battle inflicted irreparable damage on the Imperial Japanese Navy and tilted the balance of power in the Pacific in USA favour. In the words of historian John Keegan, Midway was "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare." It was Japan's worst naval defeat in 350 years.
