Our birds were protected by revetments which I hunkered down inside and beside my aircraft as shrapnel was being sprayed out in the open. 5 minutes later the bombardment had stopped so we left and flew our missions for that day.
If they would have had drones like those being used today our little patriotic war shit show would have been a different endeavor IMO.
For other than large drones, the shelters' ends could be closed off with chicken wire enclosures that could be easily moved out of the way when the aircraft needs to sortie. Still potential for damage, but much better than a direct hit in the center of the airframe.
