When you consider that the UK has, I think, about 67 million people, vs. The US with close to 350 million, the immigration problem becomes one of percentages rather than raw numbers, and available land area to hold all those immigrants.
The entire UK is, I believe, about the size of just the state of Virginia in the US.
ETA: I rechecked my figures, and I was wrong. The US state of Virginia is less than half the land area of the UK, at 42.775 square miles (VA) vs. 94,058 square miles (UK). The US state closest to the UK in land area Is Oregon, at 95,996 square miles.
Population density comes into play, however, when discussing immigrants - you gotta have some place to stand all those people up! The UK already has a staggering 745 people per square mile, compared to only 44.1 for Oregon, and only 219 for Virginia... and only 98.3 for the US as a whole. So the UK is already getting pretty crowded, and really doesn't need any more interlopers.
Personally, I think that if you have a population density of more than 20 people per square mile, then you already need more "elbow room", just like Daniel Boone.
