Oh, yeah - way before 2001. It was China's record album piracy that spurred the RIAA to do something about it back in the 1960s. "In 1966, RCA Victor estimated that there were two million illicit copies of 'The Sound Of Music' in circulation." Here's my Chinese copy of that album. Of course, I purchased a legitimate copy of the album long before I found this curiosity:
