Did you know that WWII Marine flying ace and Medal of Honor recipient Major Joe Foss (26 victories) was instrumental in the creation of the Super Bowl? As commissioner of the AFL in the 1960s, he launched a campaign to push the rival NFL into committing to a championship game.


Joseph Jacob Foss (April 17, 1915 – January 1, 2003) South Dakota farm boy became America's first "Ace-of-Aces" in World War II. The F4U Corsair was assigned to Marine Squadron VMF-115. Famous Marine ace Joe Foss was chosen to take command of the unit just 16 days after it was established in Santa Barbara, California on July 1, 1943.

Though VMF-115 was officially the "Silver Eagles", Foss commissioned Walt Disney artists to create an unofficial logo for the squadron, "to exemplify a more aggressive, devil-may-care attitude." What developed was a happy, anthropomorphic Corsair smoking a cigar, Foss’s trademark complete with goggles and silk scarf. The unit was often called "Joe’s Jokers" by the men in the squadron. Some versions of the logo have cards arrayed behind the plane.

As lead pilot in his flight of eight Wildcats, the group soon became known as "Foss's Flying Circus", with two sections Foss nicknamed "Farm Boys" and "City Slickers." In December 1942, Foss contracted malaria. He was sent to Sydney Australia for rehabilitation, where he met Australian ace Clive "Killer" Caldwell and delivered some lectures on operational flying to RAF pilots, newly assigned to the theater.

While in the Pacific theater, Foss had (again) contracted malaria and had been sent home to Klamath Falls, Oregon Rehabilitation Center.

He was also the Governor of South Dakota from (1955–1959), and president of the National Rifle Association of America (NRA).

February 9, 1972: The British government led by Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath declared a “state of emergency” one month into a strike by the National Union of Mineworkers for a better pay deal. Power cuts increased and the sales of candles reached levels not seen since Victorian times. The strike ended on 28 February 1972.

The myth of the 1970s tends to blur three moments into one: the power cuts as a result of the 1972 miners’ strike, the implementation of a three-day week by Edward Heath’s Conservative government during a subsequent coal dispute in 1974, and the spectacle of dead bodies lying unburied as rubbish piled up on British streets during the 1978–79 “Winter of Discontent.” The power of organized labor, whether in the form of industrial action or the bloc votes wielded by so-called union barons at Labour Party conferences, looms large in these stories.

We have to disentangle the 1972 miners’ strike from these hackneyed associations in order to understand Britain’s first national coal dispute since the 1926 general strike, when private coal owners had locked out the miners. The strike opened up a crucial phase in postwar British history, when it seemed as if working-class radicalism might transform the country’s social order.

Reginald Maudling, the Conservative home secretary, later recalled the symbolic importance of Saltley Gate:

    The number of strikers involved was so great, and feelings were running so high, that any attempt by the relatively small body of police who could be assembled to keep the depot open by force could have led to very grave consequences. Some of my colleagues asked me afterwards why I had not sent in troops to support the police, and I remember asking them one simple question: “If they had been sent in, should they have gone in with their rifles loaded or unloaded?”

In her memoirs, Margaret Thatcher tersely described her feelings on the subject: “For me, what happened at Saltley took on no less significance than it did for the Left.”

Under the circumstances, it was hardly surprising that Lord John Widgery was so anxious to whitewash the Bloody Sunday massacre by the Parachute Regiment in Derry, which had happened just a few weeks before the miners’ strike began. Over the course of the 1970s, right-wing politicians and journalists openly discussed the idea that it might be necessary to use British soldiers in order to contain social conflict on the home front.

Half a century after the miners’ 1972 victory, we should understand what drove a workforce to its first national strike action since the 1920s, and why they were successful. It was frustration rather than destitution that motivated the miners. They felt that the Coal Board was not rewarding their efforts justly and feared for their economic security.

They also had the industrial power necessary to demand justice.

The miners won another major victory in the 1974 strike, which led to the fall of Edward Heath’s government after the Tory prime minister called an election posing the question “Who rules Britain?” But they subsequently lost their capacity for unified national mobilization and their position of strength within Britain’s political economy.
