President Trump says tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico are paused for a month for negotiations. Mexico's president said it will put 10,000 troops at the border and Trudeau said he'd cooperate on border security.

This is similar to Operation Intercept, an anti-drug measure enacted by Nixon in 1969. He shut down the US-Mexico border, ostensibly to stop marijana trafficking. In reality, it was meant to disrupt Mexico's economy; G. Gordon Liddy called it an exercise in "international extortion."

Op Intercept, ironically, helped to foster the growth of the cartels. Nixon's failed War on Drugs moved heroin trafficking from Turkey and SE Asia (controlled by the Corsican and American mobs) to Mexico. Cartels grew in the vacuum.
