Since we just had a mid-air collision with a commercial & military aircraft over Reagan airport, here's one from 1971.

All 44 passengers and five crew aboard Hughes Airwest Flight 706 are killed when the Douglas DC-9 collides with a US Marine Corps McDonnell F-4B Phantom jet in the skies over Duarte, California. After the mid-air collision, the DC-9 crashed into a remote canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains. The Marine pilot was also killed. This happened on June 6, 1971. Aviation Safety Network

The "long '70s" is a term used to describe the decade of the 1970s, which was marked by a period of radical change. It was a time of political turmoil, economic recession, and social unrest. It started somewhere around 1968 and ends around 1982. There were so many fascinating schisms & fractures and new groups. One you may of never heard of is UAWMF transfiguring into the International Werewolf Conspiracy.

By transferring the battle-lines to conspiratorial terms, it reflects Cold War paranoia and portrays the group as an empty signifier aesthetically charged enough to invite spectators/the non-hip to fill it with their pathological subjections to contemporary ideology, with their incomprehension generating uncertainty and fear—“’Where do they come from?’ Who knows. ’What do they want?’ They won’t say.’” (Rat 1969)

This new identity cannot be armed in the same way it was before. It cannot be ‘dressed for war’ like the holy warriors of the Family, nor can it be nurtured in the communality of the affinity group. Instead, as the image of the naked werewolf shows, it is an evolution of those ideas into a form that gives primacy to a nude body of aggression, a performance of “the Unknown” understood as a pervasive supernatural force deeply embedded in a relationship with nature configured around a myth. In this case, that myth is the Cold War narrative of apocalypse brought about by a revolutionary enemy within. Hence, the werewolf13 arises as a phantasmatic contradiction, killing myths by consuming them (“their stomachs sag with the weight of a satisfying feast”) while remaining a myth themselves. And a myth they would remain: by the end of 1969, both groups had withered away, and founders like Ben Morea had gone into hiding, away from New York.

Starting with the concept of the affinity group, UAWMF developed a critique of American identity through the appropriation of Native American imagery, attempting to distinguish itself from what it saw as the individualist, consumerist, egoistic, authoritarian bases of being American. It proposed an idiosyncratic anthropology that re-functionalized the family to serve a purpose other than social reproduction of capitalist relationships, promoting an image of free sexuality that enacted the principle of “coming together according to mutual Need and Desire”

Plus, July 4th 2026 the US Navy will conduct its 7th International Naval Review (INR) in New York City Harbor to commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States of America. It is planned for more than 80 ships from 30 countries to be taking part. The previous INR was held July 4, 2000, New York Harbor.

We will assemble on the Delaware River historical, replica, and active-duty ships representing every major war which the Navy has fought: the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the subsequent conflicts in the Middle East.
