We cannot leave the Galway area without mentioning the peculiar inhabitant of Black Lake or what the locals have
always call Lough Dubh. But don't attempt to search for the remote body of water on Google Maps, you'll struggle to
find it with the limited specifics offered in most websites!
Some researchers say Lough Dubh empties its contents absorbed from the surrounding mountains into the River Suck
and others indicate the lake resides in the 'townland' of Fiddaun. However, all agree that somewhere in County Galway
there is a place that holds this legend.
The account goes like this. In March of 1962, a schoolmaster called Alphonsus Mullaney decided to take his son fishing
on the elusive Dubh and during their angling, the boy's line seemed to become snagged on something. After some time
of struggling with his would-be catch and hoping to at least unhook himself from the submerged hindrance, Alphonsus
and his offspring observed an unusual creature emerge from the lough a few yards away still attached to the fishing line.
The schoolmaster described the contemplating beast as possessing short stumpy legs, small ears, and a single horn
protruding from its snout. It was dark-grey in colour, covered in bristles and the size of a cow or donkey. Mr Mullaney's
son yanked on his rod once more in alarm and the line snapped, leaving the animal to escape back in Lough Bubh.
Later, Mullaney returned returned to the area with a posse of armed men, but could find no trace of the odd animal.
The thing seen in Lough Dubh.
An interesting look at the remote lakes of Ireland.
