January 1, 1973: The UK officially became a member of the European Economic Community (EEC). The Daily Mail was very enthusiastic about Britain’s entry at the time.
Jan 1, 2000: As part of a bold new reality TV social experiment called Castaway 2000, where 36 British men, women, and children are placed on Taransay, a remote uninhabited Scottish island, about 2 miles off the west coast of Harris, Outer Hebrides, where they will remain for one year. The castaways were to build a sustainable self-sufficient community from scratch (apart from some buildings which were already there, and some which had been placed there for them). They were to grow their own vegetables, kill their own animals and become a community for the year.
Candidates for the program were selected and trained by survival expert John "Lofty" Wiseman (retired British special forces unit, SAS) to represent a cross-section of British society.
Off to a rough start there was an outbreak of flu early in the year and soon afterwards they were offered antibiotics because of a nearby outbreak of meningitis. Some were transferred off island to a nearby warm hotel. Due to a diverse number of participants from many varying ways of life, there were many arguments on the island. One notable clash was between a family of devout Seventh-day Adventists and a gay man. the oldest man, the gay man, and a black family had enough and quit early. The gay man later sued the BBC & the TV station and won.

Just a couple of crazy desert dudes with too many fireworks.
Helluva a cool shot of a stealth bomber flying over the Rose Bowl parade this morning...
Ships on vigor of the waves are skimming
Barren summits to the verdant plains
Each horizon is a new beginning
Rise and reign
Far from the fjords and the ice cold currents
Ravens soar over new frontiers
Songs and sagas of a fate determined
Shields and spears
Vows of favour or the thrill of plunder
Pull together for the clan and kin
Clank of hammers and the crash of thunder
Pound within
Oh-ho-oh
The echoes of eternity
Oh-ho-oh
Valhalla calling me
Into 2025 we go...
