December 17, 1968: Mary Flora Bell (age 11), was sentenced to life in detention at "Her Majesty's pleasure" at Newcastle Assizes, for the murder of two boys: Martin Brown (aged 4) and Brian Howe (aged 3). The case attracted huge media attention. In 1980, at age 23 she was released from prison. Given her early childhood horrorific abuse by her mother it's not much of a surprise. A lifelong court order granted her anonymity, which has since been extended to protect the identity of her daughter and granddaughter. She has since lived under a series of pseudonyms.
