Tetsuya "Ted" Fujita (1920-1998) studies a tornado formation in his lab at the University of Chicago. Also known as Mr. Tornado, he developed the Fujita scale for rating the intensity of twisters.


Fujita is most recognizable as the "F" in the F0 to F5 scale, which categorizes the strength of tornadoes based on wind speeds and ensuing damage. Originally devised in 1971, a modified version of the Fujita Scale continues to be used today. The version used today—the Enhanced Fujita Scale—ranges from EF0 tornadoes with winds of 65 to 85 miles an hour, to EF5 tornadoes with winds exceeding 200 miles an hour. The U.S. National Weather Service has rated tornadoes according to the Fujita Scale since 1973.

Fujita was residing in Kokura during World War II. Kokura was the primary target for the "Fat Man" plutonium bomb, but on the morning of August 9, 1945, the city was obscured by clouds and smoke from the neighboring city of Yahata, which had been firebombed the day before. As a result, the bomb was dropped on the secondary target, Nagasaki. Studying the damage caused by the nuclear explosions contributed to Fujita's understanding of downbursts and microbursts as "starbursts" of wind hitting the Earth's surface and spreading out.
