Gold panning is one of those things I keep meaning to try. I did a small bit of reading on it, and apparently creeks and rivers are good places to prospect. You want to pan near bends in the creek, where gold might accumulate. I think my state of Pennsylvania isn't very good for gold though, probably why I never bothered.
