July 10, 1926: Fred Gwynne was born. Gwynne served as a radioman 3rd class on a submarine chaser in the Pacific during WWII before attending Harvard and pursuing an acting career. His most notably roles were as Herman Munster on THE MUNSTERS and Officer Francis Muldoon in "Car 54, Where Are You?"




July 10, 1952: A rare sight. USS Sea Poacher (SS-406) performed a unique submarine-to-airship rescue when it towed the disabled K-86 blimp and its 10-man crew for 40 miles to NAS Key West.




July 10, 1962: On Nikola Tesla Day the Telstar 1 launched from Cape Canaveral to become first active communications satellite capable of relaying television signals from Europe to North America. Soon after launch, Telstar enabled the first transatlantic TV transmission, linking the U.S. and France. It remained active for only 7 months, but it is still in Earth orbit.


President John F. Kennedy had high praise for “our American communications satellite” launched during the “heat” of the Cold War. “This (is an) outstanding symbol of America’s space achievements,” the president said.

He’s best known as the voice of numerous cartoon characters, including: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Flintstones, Elmer Fudd, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Wile E. Coyote,The Roadrunner, Yosemite Sam, Sam the Sheepdog, Taz the Tazmanian Devil, Speedy Gonzales, Marvin the Martian, Foghorn Leghorn, Pepé la Pew, Charlie the Dog, Blacque Jacque Shellacque, Pussyfoot, Private Snafu and most of the other characters from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies animated cartoons, And Buck Rogers.
