If Ethiopia wants them back, they'll have to loot them back, legally speaking. It's the only proper way to resolve the impasse, and British folk are nothing if not proper!

In the real world, British Museum Curators are a stalwart lot, built of the same stuff that Indiana Jones springs from. There is no artifact, neither in this life nor the next, no matter how "sacred", that a British Museum Curator would fear to examine... suitably gloved, of course.
Due to the foregoing, I believe this tale to either be entirely fabricated, or, at the very least, "elaborated" upon into the realm of fantasy.
