Tallinn is the oldest capital city in Northern Europe, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea and has one of the best preserved medieval town centres in the world. Due to the strategic location by the sea, its medieval port became a significant trade hub, especially in the 14–16th centuries, when Tallinn grew in importance as the northernmost member city of the Hanseatic League. In 2022, Tallinn was listed among the top-10 "medium-sized European cities of the future". The Brotherhood of the Black Heads fraternity erected a Christmas tree in Tallinn’s town hall square for the first time in 1441. This is the world’s oldest recorded Christmas tree in a public urban space.
