Feb 28, 1932: James Chadwick's discovery of neutrons became public. Chadwick had observed radiation after bombarding beryllium with helium nuclei, which he explained as a particle with no charge and with a mass similar to the proton’s.


Although the neutron is a senior citizen of sorts, whose existence was predicted in 1920 and confirmed in 1932, it’s still not fully understood.

It was James Chadwick of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory who, after nearly a decade of experimentation, devised a method to detect these particles, which have essentially the same mass as the proton but no electrical charge. Not only did Chadwick’s triumph earn him the Nobel Prize in Physics three years later, it also gave him and the physics community a new particle to play with.

Flipping back in time, did you know German spy Anton Dilger (13 Feb 1884 – 17 Oct 1918), a young American doctor cultivated anthrax & other biological agents in his Washington, DC home that were used to kill thousands of horses & mules in the US bound for Allied forces in Europe during WWI? It was a deadly effective operation. From late 1915 and well into 1916, thousands of horses and mules were killed by the biological agents. There were human victims as well, including at least four individuals killed while working near the animal corrals during the winter of 1915. According to the National Counterintelligence and Security Center's exhibit on German sabotage in the US in WWI.


His father, Hubert Dilger, was a United States Army captain who had received the Medal of Honor for his work as an artilleryman at the Battle of Chancellorsville (1863) during the American Civil War. Anton eventually fled to Madrid, Spain, where he died during the 1918 flu pandemic.

Apple Inc. is canceling a decadelong effort to build an electric car, according to people with knowledge of the matter, abandoning one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the company.

Apple made the disclosure internally Tuesday, surprising the nearly 2,000 employees working on the project, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the announcement wasn’t public. The decision was shared by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, a vice president in charge of the effort, according to the people.

The two executives told staffers that the project will begin winding down and that many employees on the car team — known as the Special Projects Group, or SPG — will be shifted to the artificial intelligence division under executive John Giannandrea. Those employees will focus on generative AI projects, an increasingly key priority for the company.

Elon Musk, head of Tesla Inc., also celebrated the move. He shared a post on the X social media site with a saluting emoji and a cigarette.

The decision to ultimately wind down the project is a bombshell for the company, ending a multibillion-dollar effort called Project Titan that would have vaulted Apple into a whole new industry. The tech giant started working on a car around 2014, setting its sights on a fully autonomous electric vehicle with a limousine-like interior and voice-guided navigation.

But the project struggled nearly from the start, with Apple changing the team’s leadership and strategy several times. Lynch and Williams took charge of the undertaking a few years ago — following the departure of Doug Field, now a senior executive at Ford Motor Co.

Ultimately, focusing on AI may be a better bet, Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Anurag Rana and Andrew Girard said in a note. “Apple’s decision to abandon electric cars and shift resources toward generative AI is a good strategic move, we believe, given the long-term profitability potential of AI revenue streams versus cars.”
