Watching the direction many "churches" have been taking the past few years, it would not surprise me at all if loads of alleged "christians" just started lining up for their beast mark, if such a thing were brought into existence.
Personally, I think everything in Revelations has already happened, long ago, but I cannot argue that vast numbers of alleged "christians" in the modern day don't have actual evil already imprinted on their hearts, regardless of whatever marks might get put on their hands or foreheads.
Also just a personal opinion, but I think what is imprinted in their hearts is of much more consequence than anything that could ever get stamped between their eyes.
