I disagree with that one. I think you need to be worse than the monster, but able to revert back to good when it's done. As long as you remember what you fought for in the first place, it shouldn't be an issue.
In this case, the monsters are the elites of the world who will ultimately bring on this scenario. How else would you defeat such a monster which has all the funding, all the decision-making, etc.?
