The first smartphone was released Nov 23, 1994 to the peasants who could afford it. The IBM Simon was first introduced on Nov 23, 1992 at COMDEX in Las Vegas. IBM debuted a prototype device, code named "Sweetspot"...Although the term "smartphone" was not coined until 1995, because of Simon's features and capabilities, it has been retrospectively referred to as the first smartphone.
