October 26, 1881: The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. It was a face-off between lawmen Wyatt Earp, his two brothers Virgil and Morgan, and their friend Doc Holliday, against members of the Cowboys, including the McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton. In a brief but intense shootout lasting about 30 seconds, Billy Clanton and both McLaurys were killed. Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded, while Doc Holliday received a minor injury. The shootout was because of escalated tensions between the outlaws and the lawmen. "I'm your huckleberry."


American society could use these guys right now. Just sayin.


October 26, 1972: The National Park Service began offering guided tours of Alcatraz Island, once home to a notorious federal penitentiary. Located in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz had held some of America's most infamous criminals, including Al Capone. It closed as a prison in 1963 and later became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The tours highlighted the prison's history, from its cells to tales of famous inmates and escape attempts. Been here several times and it is a weird, eerie, haunting experience.


Needs to be reopened. I know 535 congress critters & senators that would make great (permanent) guests.

At the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis senior aides to President John F. Kennedy began receiving pink identification cards and packets of information instructing them on where to go in the event of an emergency. Special Assistant to the President, David Powers asked at the time: “What happens to our wives and kids?” It fell to President Kennedy’s naval aide, Captain Tazewell Shepard, to address the massive morale gap of what to do with the “dependents.” The young officer responded with a plan to have the family members of select White House staff assemble in a fenced-in area at Washington’s Reno Reservoir for a motorcade ride out of the city to an undisclosed relocation site. The call to convene at the reservoir would have come in the form of a “Civil Defense Alert.” Assuming that the rest of Washington (and the world) would be privy to such an alert, it is interesting to note that Captain Shepard does not include a Plan B to address the inevitable D.C. evacuation gridlock and general panic.

But, as Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Culp) says of the arrangement in the film, Thirteen Days, "Of course, that’s for morale. The missiles only take five minutes to get here."

Tazewell T. Shepard Jr., a retired two-star Navy rear admiral who was awarded the Navy Cross for for bravery during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. He was a naval aide to President John F. Kennedy, from 1961 to 1963. Died June 21, 2013 at a rehabilitation center in Huntsville, Ala. He was 92.

The war on reality...

It’s time to switch off your critical faculties, wrap yourself in the American flag, or the Israeli flag, or the Ukrainian flag, or, better yet, all three flags, and stand with the Forces of Freedom and Goodness as they exercise their God-given right to defend the world from the Children of Darkness, and the Putin-Nazis, and Hate, and Rape, and Baby Murderers, and Baby Rapers, and Baby-Raper sympathizers!

For those of us who are old enough to remember 9/11 and its aftermath, it’s déjà vu all over again. Except we already had The War on Terror. So, I don’t know what we’re calling it this time. Maybe it’s The War on Horror, or “Horrific Horror,” as President Biden put it.

Or maybe we should call it The War on Whatever. After all, it’s all the same war.

No. That isn’t going to sell. No one is going to fight a War on Whatever. We need something utterly meaningless but catchy. Something that will shut people’s minds off and keep them from asking inconvenient questions, like a corporate slogan or thought-terminating cliche.
