Oct 19, 1781: Representatives of Lord Cornwallis hand over his sword and formally surrender to George Washington’s representative at the Battle of Yorktown, virtually ending the U.S Revolutionary War against the British. The siege of Yorktown was the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in North America, and led to the surrender of Cornwallis and the capture of both him and his army. The Continental Army's victory at Yorktown prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict.




The last crew member of the German submarine U-96, Friedrich Grade, died at the ripe old age of 107 on October 13th, 2023. Friedrich Grade was the chief engineer on U-96, which became widely known thanks to the novel "Das Boot".

In 1944 the Nazis allowed the Red Cross to tour parts of the Theresienstadt Ghetto (German-occupied Czechoslovakia) which they’d mocked-up to look like a "spa country resort town" for elderly Jews and children. Letting only a small amount of aid into Gaza is potentially the same PR strategy: "look, we're really trying to help."

Fifteen thousand children passed through Theresienstadt. Although forbidden to do so, they attended school. They painted pictures, wrote poetry, and otherwise tried to maintain a vestige of normalcy. Approximately 90 percent of these children perished in killing centers.
