The year was 1932, it was summer and Mrs. Raffetto had been asked, by the Nevada Native Daughters, to sing a song about Nevada at the annual picnic at Bowers Mansion. She completed "Home Means Nevada" at 4:00am on the day of the picnic and sang her composition that afternoon. The song was very well received and former Governor Roswell K. Colcord said to Mrs. Raffetto, "Honey, that's the prettiest Nevada Song that I have ever heard. It should be made the state song of Nevada!"

The song that Mrs. Raffetto sang that afternoon, "Home Means Nevada," did become the official state song of Nevada. It was adopted by the legislature on February 6, 1933.

Part of the problem, the authors point out, might have been that viewers expected a show more like Laugh-In, which is not surprising considering it was created by Laugh-In vets George Schlatter and Ed Friendly. Instead, viewers wound up with "a crude fraud," and found themselves "repelled or confused or antagonized by it." One female viewer said "All I can remember is the word 'sex,' in huge letters, pounding across the screen," a scene that lasted several minutes, while guests Tim Conway and Bonnie Boland "flitted in and out of the picture, mugging suggestively at each other, to the tune of throbbing electronic sounds building in intensity."

Mickey Spillane's Latest H-Bomb! - KISS ME DEADLY opened in Los Angeles May 18, 1955.



One evening, Hammer gives a ride to Christina, an attractive hitchhiker on a lonely country road, who has escaped from the nearby lunatic asylum. Thugs waylay them and force his car to crash. When Hammer returns to semi-consciousness, he hears Christina being tortured until she dies. Hammer, both for vengeance and in hopes that “something big” is behind it all, decides to pursue the case.

Where postwar noir exposed the underbelly of America by allowing the struggles in its shadows to see the glow of celluloid, "Deadly" turns that light into one so bright; it leaves a silhouette behind, as if cinema itself has been leveled in an atomic blast. The film screams onto screen with an opening scene that immediately alerts audiences to its explosive intentions. Out of the blackness of the theater we see a woman emerge wearing nothing but a trench coat, standing in traffic risking her life desperately trying to hitch a ride.

The Kefauver Commission, a federal unit dedicated to investigating corrupting influences in the 1950s, singled this out as 1955's number one menace to American youth. Because of this, director Robert Aldrich felt compelled to conduct a writing campaign for the free speech rights of independent filmmakers.


All three of the female catalysts appear separately to Mike Hammer as barefoot and (implied) naked under either robes or trench coats: Christina (the good) on the highway, Velda (the wise) in her apartment, and Lily (the evil) at her hideout.

Features an answering machine that records to a reel to reel tape recorder.
Included among the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" and among the American Film Institute's 2001 list of 400 movies nominated for the top 100 Most Heart-Pounding American Movies. A film made quite specifically to attack the novel it was based on and the far-right ethos it represented; director Robert Aldrich also described it to one interviewer as "anti-McCarthy and anti-Macarthur".

Despite intensive research it is almost impossible to completely uncover the circumstances that led to the existence of two endings, the complete ending with scenes showing Hammer and Velda escaping to the beach and into the surf and a shortened ending (a.k.a. the US censorship ending) that ends with the beach house exploding, insinuating that Hammer and Velda died in the explosion.

The main theory as to why this ending exists is that it was a censorship measure, presumably imposed by a United Artists executive in hopes of earning the controversial film a run in conservative Southern areas.

As explained above, the longer ending with scenes showing Hammer and Velda on the beach and in the surf is the original ending. This ending has been recovered for the restored film version available on DVD. Despite the shortened version being more well-known in the US (and thus considered the original by many viewers), it is definitely an ending edited after the completion of the film by his director and without the latter's approval. As Aldrich explained: "I have never seen a print without, repeat, without Hammer and Velda stumbling in the surf. That's the way it was shot, that's the way it was released; the idea being that Mike was left alive long enough to see what havoc he had caused, though certainly he and Velda were both seriously contaminated." THE ROAD WARRIOR (Original title: Mad Max 2) opened May 21, 1982 in Los Angeles.







Slightly censored when first released in the US (of course), but released without cuts abroad. The Australian version has several more seconds of Wez pulling the arrow out of his arm, and a few more seconds of Wez's partner on the ground with the boomerang embedded in his head. This footage was absent on the USA VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD releases, but is present in the US Blu-ray release. Modern US releases of the film, such as the Blu-Ray, only have the "MAD MAX 2" title.

In 1984, the film made its US network television debut on NBC in a version that has been referred to by fans as the 'Lost Version'. It contained a great deal of alternate and deleted material that has never been in any other officially released version of the film. This footage is spread out over the entirety of the film and amounts mostly to small scene extensions and the use of alternate takes in order to tone down the film's violence. The most striking difference however, is a totally different narrator (one with an American accent) being heard in the film's opening and closing scenes.

May 22, 1957: a 13.5-Megaton Mark-17 thermonuclear bomb (minus its nuclear capsule) being transported aboard a B-36 bomber from Biggs AFB, Texas, to Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, accidentally fell through the bomb bay doors as the B-36 approached Albuquerque.



Although the ~42,000-pound bomb's retardation parachute deployed, it landed hard, causing its conventional high explosives to detonate, shattering the weapon into numerous fragments, and blasting a crater 12 feet deep and 25 feet wide. Shrapnel was later found nearly a mile away.

Capt. Richard Meyer glanced out the cockpit and saw black smoke rising from the desert. Controllers at Kirtland AFB saw it too and radioed, “Do you have ‘hot cargo’ aboard?,” obliquely referring to the massive weapon it was carrying moments earlier. “Not anymore,” replied Meyer.

To reassure the public, Air Force officials insisted the explosion was minor and "categorically denied that it was any type of nuclear weapon." It only revealed the truth behind this Broken Arrow in 1986, in response to a FOIA request from Albuquerque Journal.

Considering how many nuclear accidents and near misses on USA side (mostly Air Force that we know of), have other nuclear states ever shared their nuclear "mishaps" and close calls?

Only a few, and sporadically, and not in as much detail. And generally only when they could not be covered up (such as when the Royal Navy's HMS Vanguard and the French Navy's Le Triomphant ballistic missile submarines collided in February 2009). This book has some useful details:

May 22, 1968: the USS Scorpion (SSN-589) sank mysteriously in about 10,000 feet of water in the Atlantic Ocean, about 400 nautical miles southwest of the Azores, with 99 crew and two Mark 45 ASTOR nuclear torpedoes (each armed with a 10-15 kiloton W34 warhead).



When the submarine failed to return as scheduled to Norfolk Naval Station, the Navy initiated a search, declaring the submarine and crew "presumed lost" on June 5. It was eventually found and photographed on the seabed in late October, and by the bathyscaphe Trieste II in 1969.

Subsequent official investigations as to the cause of the sinking were inconclusive. Among the possibilities: a hydrogen explosion during a battery charge, accidental activation of a Mark-37 torpedo, an explosion of a defective Mark-37 torpedo inside its tube, a detached propeller shaft, or a malfunctioning trash disposal unit. It is also possible that the Scorpion collided with a Soviet submarine (which did not sink) and that was later observed undergoing repairs.

General consensus seems to be batteries exploded, killing/incapacitating entire crew instantaneously, followed by violent implosion after it slowly sank to crush depth.

More recently, several authors have speculated the Scorpion was attacked and destroyed by a Soviet submarine while en route to or gathering intelligence on a Soviet naval flotilla operating near the Azores.

The candidates did not disappoint, especially in regards to the secrecy clause. Frank Stanton, the last living member on Eisenhower’s list, only spoke about the emergency plans fifty years later; at the age of ninety-six, in a 2004 telephone interview, Stanton mentioned that were it not for the inquiry, he would have never mentioned the program. He is the only member of the E10 to discuss the emergency agencies publicly. Compared to leaks coming out of many different classified programs over the years, this level of secrecy, for such a duration, is nothing short of exceptional.

Eisenhower’s Shadow Government - Every Appointee received same letter. These men were known as "The Eisenhower Ten" for Continuity of government (COG) aka part of the "Deep State."
